[1] Jean Baptiste Pâquette was born of French descendant parents on the Rivière aux Saumons at St-Régis, Québec, aka Ahkwesáhsne Mohawk Reservation. His father,
Louis, who was identified as a farmer and laborer, did not attend his baptism in Vaudreuil the following year. It is still unknown where Baptiste grew up. Discovered for our
subject ancestor, Jean Baptiste Paquet, b. 1822, was his employment record for the Hudson Bay Company, recruited in Montréal at the age of 24. Baptiste Poquette was a
trapper and logger for Hudson Bay Co. in 1845, from 1 June to 31 May; and from 1846 to 1851 he was a canoe middleman at Fort Simpson on the Tsimpsean Peninsula,
where he met and married his wife, Mary. The village that surrounded the fort was known as Port Simpson (In 1986 the name was officially changed to Lax Kw'alaams). From
1851 to 1853, he was a woodcutter for the steam vessel 'Beaver'; from 1853 to 1860 he was a laborer at Fort Simpson; and in 1862 he moved to Dungeness Washington,
then to Port Crescent where he claimed a homestead. He is buried on his homestead at Port Crescent. By best evidence we have concluded Baptiste to be the son of Louis.
However, a marriage acte for him and Mary recently found states his parent's names as Jean Baptiste Paquet and Marie Paquet. I have therefore flagged his ancestry portion
of the chart until such time as the new information can be verified and researched.

[2] Mary may have been a Tsimshian woman from the village of Port Simpson, located halfway between the Nass River and the Skeena River. Some unverified sources state
she was Tlingit. However, Census data for Alaska 1900, 1910 and 1920 indicates that her firstborn, Martha, and her grandchildren were Tsimshian.
(Because of the specific boundaries of that nation and the nature of the Hudson Bay franchise within them, and the identity of the majority of tribesmen involved in the
migration to New Metlakatla, including her daughter, Martha, I believe she was of the Tsimshian Nation, Gitlaan Tribe, Ganhada (Raven) Clan, which was resident at Lax

The name Gitlaan means literally "people of the Stern Canoe." The Ganhada is the name for the Raven clan (a kinship group) in the language of the Tsimshian nation of British
Columbia, Canada, and southeast Alaska. Since 1834, the Gitlaan have been based at Lax Kw'alaams, when a Hudson's Bay Company fort was established there. In 1887, the great
majority of Tsimshian peoples moved from Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla, B.C., with the Anglican lay minister William Duncan to found the community of "New" Metlakatla, Alaska. -

Mary died sometime between 1864 and 1867 in either Port Crescent or Dungeness, Territory of Washington. One source says she is buried on "Dungeness Indian Reservation".
(Note: I have not been able to find a reservation that is, or was, so named. The only reserved lands I have been able to find that were extant at the time she died were at

Local area reserved lands and their history: In 1874, a band of S'Klallams under the leadership of Lord James Balch, whose father had signed the 1855 Point No Point Treaty,
which had created The Skokomish Indian Reservation, raised enough money to pay $500 in gold coin for a 210-acre tract near Dungeness, Washington Territor. The name of the
property is the Jamestown S'Klallam community. The area's other reserved lands are the Lower Elwha Reservation and the Port Gamble Reservation, established in 1930.
[3] J Bte and Mary were officially married by the Catholic Church May 7, 1861 in Victoria Diocese: "The seventh May one thousand eight hundred sixty one, J Bte Paquet, son of J
Bte Paquet and of Marie Paquet of Montreal, and Marie, of the tribe the Simshian, after the publication of three bans of marriage here signed by us legitimately unite by the sacred link
of marriage in the presence of the ... " verified by this partial document. It happened 3 months prior to Adeline's birth and the couple's emigration to Washington Territory.
[4] Martha Poquette may have been promised to Robert Hewson in a prearranged marriage. At the age of 12, she was left behind by her parents when they relocated the
family to the Territory of Washington. Best estimates are that Martha married Hewson when she was 16. On Annette Island at Metlakatla, Robert and Martha Hewson in the
[1900 US] census and in the [1910 US] census are enumerated as Tsimshian. After Robert's death, Martha in the [1920 US] census is shown as the head of the family,
residing with her adult children and 4 grandchildren, all under the name of Hewson.
[5] Wesley, biological son of Esldore Guerro and Martha Hewson, was adopted by his grandmother Martha Poquette Hewson after his parent's divorce. He and his
descendants assumed the Hewson surname. The 1930 US census at Ketchikan listed him living with his mother, Martha Hewson, and identified her as Tlingit (Tongass). That is
at odds with previous census years, see footnotes [2] and [3], which listed Martha, her mother and father as Tsimshian. Wesley's father's nationality was listed as Norwegian.
Wesley Hewson in the 1940 BIA census identified himself as full blood Tsimshian. (Note: I have discovered no further information about his father ~ MF)
[6] Sophia's birth date is charted as Dec 12, 1855, taken from a 1932 obituary printed at the time of her death, and verified by eight (8) US census reports. Her Find-a-Grave
memorial lists her birth date as Sep. 12, 1854. Her memorial plaque and individual headstone, both imaged on that site, are engraved with only the year, '1854'. Washington
State death record states Sophia died from cerebral hemorrhage and paralysis (stroke).

Louis, who was identified as a farmer and laborer, did not attend his baptism in Vaudreuil the following year. It is still unknown where Baptiste grew up. Discovered for our
subject ancestor, Jean Baptiste Paquet, b. 1822, was his employment record for the Hudson Bay Company, recruited in Montréal at the age of 24. Baptiste Poquette was a
