[2] Jasper at age 23 was living with his uncle, William Albert Haden (from 1897 to 1901) on the farm adjacent to that of Grace & brother, John D. Wares. He and Grace had two daughters out of wedlock before he returned to Missouri. There, he married twice, but neither marriage produced children. [3] Thelma Marie Wares was surrendered by Grace to South Dakota Children’s Home Society at Letcher in Sanborn County on 27-Jul-1900. She was placed with Alexander (Joseph) Chase at Britton in Marshall County on the 29th of August; then was legally adopted by Joseph and his wife Nettie on October 30th, 1900. The couple changed her name to Etta May. [4] Margaret Wares was also born out of wedlock, but for refusing to surrender her for adoption, Grace was forced to leave the family farm. Margaret was adopted by Henry Julius Cavier after Grace Wares married him in 1902. *** Disclaimer The Conley connection to the Mitchell & Smith families is based upon strong circumstantial evidence.
